Ask the internet where to eat in Kihei and Coconut's Fish Cafe answers back a thousand times, which usually makes a local suspicious. Here is our honest report after years of sending guests: the hype holds. The fish is genuinely fresh, the tacos are genuinely enormous, and the strip-mall setting is genuinely part of the charm.

The tacos, explained

The house move is the loaded fish taco: grilled fresh catch — ono and mahi most days — stacked on tortillas and then buried under an avalanche of cabbage slaw, mango salsa and a coconut-kissed dressing. The published topping count runs well into the double digits, and eating one gracefully is impossible. Lean over the plate like everyone else.

Grilled-not-fried is the house religion, and it is why the tacos eat lighter than they look — you leave full, not flattened. The fish changes with the boats; when the counter says the ono is good today, believe the counter.

The rest of the menu deserves its own visit: fish and chips for the traditionalists, seafood pasta that regulars swear by, fish burgers, and a kids' menu that makes family dinner effortless. But the first visit is tacos. There are rules.

The scene

It lives in an ordinary Kihei strip mall and decorates accordingly: tables made from real surfboards, license plates and beach kitsch on the walls, and a counter line that snakes out the door at peak lunch. Order, take a number, share a surfboard with strangers, make friends.

The line is the only friction, and it behaves like Kihei lines do — long-looking, fast-moving. Aim for the shoulders: an early lunch at eleven or a late one after two glides right in. Dinner runs gentler than lunch most nights.

Everything travels well, which unlocks the best version of Coconut's: takeout eaten at a picnic table at Kamaole III with sandy feet and a sunset starting. Some of our guests never eat it any other way.

Where it fits in your week

This is the natural lunch hinge of a South Kihei beach day: morning at Kamaole II, tacos at the counter, then the afternoon decision between a nap and Keawakapu. It also solves the 'we just landed and everyone is starving' arrival problem — ten minutes from the bungalows.

Pair it with dessert next door in spirit if not geography: Ululani's shave ice is minutes away, and the taco-then-shave-ice double is the official lunch of South Maui childhoods, ours included.

If the line is unreasonable and the crew is mutinous, South Maui Fish Company's poke bowls or Nalu's are both nearby with the same fresh-fish values — Kihei takes care of its hungry.

Good to know

  • First visit = fish tacos. The menu's deep, but there are rules.
  • Ask what came in fresh — the counter's answer beats the printed menu.
  • 11 am or 2 pm beats the 12–1 scrum every time.
  • Everything travels: takeout to Kamaole III's picnic tables is elite.
  • Grilled is the default and the point — you will not miss the fryer.
  • Follow with Ululani's shave ice; it is basically the law here.

Questions

Coconut's Fish Cafe FAQ

The loaded fish tacos — grilled fresh catch under a double-digit pile of toppings including cabbage slaw, mango salsa and a coconut-milk dressing. They are enormous, genuinely fresh, and the reason the line exists. Grilled-not-fried is the house standard across the menu.

Peak lunch (noon to one) can queue out the door, but the counter moves quickly — usually 15 to 25 minutes worst case. Arrive at eleven or after two and you will barely pause. Dinner is calmer. No reservations; it is counter service with shared surfboard tables.

One of the easiest family meals in Kihei: a real kids' menu, casual shared seating where spills are unremarkable, fast counter service, and food that travels perfectly for beach-picnic conversions when patience runs out mid-wait.

Different tools: Coconut's is the sit-down-casual taco institution with seating and a full menu; South Maui Fish Company is a walk-up poke specialist best eaten from a takeout bowl. Fresh fish either way — pick by whether you want a table or a beach.
