Iao Valley reservations are the price of admission to one of Maui’s greenest places, and honestly, the system works. Ten minutes above Wailuku the valley walls go vertical, clouds snag on the ridgelines, and the Iao Needle stands 1,200 feet over the stream like a moss-covered obelisk. It is a 30-minute drive from the bungalows and an unhurried hour once you are there — book the slot, go early, and let the valley do the rest.
Iao Valley reservations and fees, explained
If you are visiting from out of state, you must reserve both entry and parking before you arrive — there is no paying at the booth, and visitors without a booking are turned away. Reservations open 30 days ahead on the state’s official portal, gostateparks.hawaii.gov, and popular mornings do fill, especially around holidays.
The math is simple: $10 per vehicle for parking plus $5 per person to enter, with the smallest kids free. Hawai’i residents skip the fees and the reservation entirely with proof of residency — though any out-of-state friends riding along still need their own tickets. You will choose an arrival window when you book; plan to show up within the first 30 minutes of it.
The park is open 7 am to 6 pm daily, and morning is the honest recommendation. The valley sits on the wet side of the West Maui Mountains, so clouds usually pile onto the ridges by late morning and afternoon showers are routine. A 7 or 8 am slot gets you the Needle in full sun, parking without circling, and the walk mostly to yourself.
