Notes from Kihei
People ask us all the time whether early summer is a good time to come. From where we sit on the north end of Kihei, June is one of the easier months of the year.
The water has warmed up from the winter, the trade winds are steady, and the school-holiday crowds don’t really land until later in the month. If you can come in the first couple of weeks of June, you get summer weather without the summer prices, and the beach in front of us stays quiet on a weekday morning.
Mornings are the calmest part of the day right now. The wind usually picks up after lunch, so we tell guests to swim, paddle or snorkel before late morning and save the afternoon for the pool or the shade. Sugar Beach is sandy and gentle for a swim; for snorkeling you’ll want to drive down to Ulua or the Kamaole points. There’s more on that in our snorkeling guide.
Mango trees are starting to drop fruit around the island, and the Maui Gold pineapple is good right now. The farmers’ markets are worth a stop for both. If you’re cooking in — and the bungalows all have full kitchens — the fish counters at the local grocery stores are reliable this time of year.
The whales are gone until winter, so if seeing them is the point of your trip, June isn’t the month. For everything else — beaches, snorkeling, the drive to Hana, sunrise on Haleakala — the weather is about as dependable as it gets here. The north end stays sunny even on the days the upcountry and the east side get rain.
